How to remove spaces from left and right side of a string via bash script?

How to remove spaces from left and right side of a string via bash script?

So on Linux I have a bash script.
In it I have:
a=' aaa '
I need to get rid of the spaces from both sides of ' aaa '.
How can I do this with the help of Python?
